Changes for Maryellen

As Maryellen starts fourth grade, she meets Angela, a new girl at her school. When their teacher asks Maryellen to help Angela learn English with her cartoon drawings, the two girls become good friends. But when her best friends, the Karens, make fun of Angela because her family is from Italy, a country that America fought during WWII. Maryellen sticks up for Angela, but worries about her friendship with the Karens. Will they still be friends?

Maryellen has already helped her two best friends overcome prejudice against a new girl—now it’s her turn to encourage her community to get a new polio vaccine. Having had polio when she was only seven years old, Maryellen is determined to help spread the word. Together, everyone decides to put on a play. But when she ends up with stage fright, she’s unsure the show will go on. Will Maryellen let her voice be heard?
