Kirsten Learns a Lesson

When Kirsten starts school for the first time in America, she’s nervous. She doesn't speak English well like her cousins and her teacher, Miss Winston, is firm and expects Kirsten to do her absolute best in school. But when Miss Winston comes to live with her family, Kirsten can’t seem to escape school.

When Kirsten meets Singing Bird, a Native American girl, her worries seem to fade away. They play, explore the woods, whistle like the birds and exchange gifts with one another. Singing Bird suggests that Kirsten should run away with her. Unsure of what to do, Kirsten decides to stay with her family and learns an important lesson about herself.
