Meet Melody

Meet Melody Ellison, an optimistic, enthusiastic and determined girl growing up with her family in Detroit, Michigan during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. Melody is excited to share with her family and grandparents a special surprise: she has been asked to sing a solo for Youth Day at her church! Unsure of what song to choose, Melody enlists the help and advice of her family, especially her older brother and sister.

When Melody learns that her older sister, Yvonne, was denied a job at a bank due to the color of her skin, she is upset. Remembering her older sister's advice that the best way to fight for equal treatment is through boycotts and protests, Melody decides to close her account at the bank. It’s then the inspirational words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that help her pick the perfect song.
