Josefina’s Decorated Hair Comb

Thank you for joining us for our program today. We are so happy that you are here!

For today’s program, we will be making a Decorated Hair Comb, a craft brought to us by one of American Girl’s kind and caring characters, Josefina. Josefina’s story takes place in 1824 when New Mexico was still part of Mexico.

Today’s craft can be found in Josefina’s Craft Book: A Look at Crafts from the Past with Projects You Can Make Today. The following directions make one hair comb. We hope you enjoy Josefina’s Decorated Hair Comb.

Materials

  • Large hair comb

  • Artist’s paintbrush

  • Acrylic paints, any colors

  • Beads, shells, buttons or other decorative items (optional)

  • White glue (optional)

Directions

  1. Decide on a pattern or design fir your hair comb. If you are going to add beads or shells, lay them out first and plan where you will put them on the comb.

  2. Use the artist’s paintbrush to paint your patten on the hair comb. Rinse and dry the brush each time you change colors.

  3. If you are adding decorative items, wait until the paint dries completely. Then squeeze a small dot of glue on the back of the bead or another decoration, and gently place it where you want it on the hair comb. Add as many decorative items as you like, but let the glue dry completely before creating layers.

Did You Know: Hair combs from Spain and southern New Mexico were prized by New Mexican women for their beauty and usefulness? Women wore hair combs to hold their hair back and to hold lace mantillas, or veils, in place over their head and shoulders.
