Julie’s Pizza Fondue

We are so happy that you have joined us for our next program for our inaugural exhibit, American Girl: 35 Years of Strong Characters

For today’s program, we will be making Pizza Fondue, a recipe brought to us by one of American Girl’s groovy characters, Julie. Her story takes place in 1974.

Today’s recipe can be found in Julie’s Cooking Studio. The following ingredients and directions make 2 1/2 cups. We hope you enjoy Julie’s Pizza Fondue.

Ingredients

  • 1 small onion

  • 1/2 pound bulk Italian sausage

  • 3 ounces sliced pepperoni

  • 24-ounce jar meatless pasta sauce

  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

  • 1 pound bulk mozzarella cheese

  • 1 loaf of Italian or French bread

  • 8 ounces whole mushrooms

Equipment

  • Chopping board

  • Sharp knife

  • Large skillet

  • Wooden spoon

  • Colander

  • Large bowl

  • 4-quart electric slow cooker

  • Measuring spoons

  • Bread knife

  • Paper towels

  • Serving plate or basket

  • Ladle

  • Serving bowl

  • Small plates

  • Dipping forks

  • Table forks

Directions

  1. Peel and chop the onion. Put the onion into the skillet.

  2. Add the Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook the sausage and onion mixture over medium-high heat until the sausage is browned.

  3. Place the colander in the bowl. Pour the sausage mixture into the colander, stirring it to drain the excess fat. When the fat hardens, throw it away.

  4. Place the sausage mixture in the slow cooker.

  5. Chop the sliced pepperoni. Add it to the slow cooker.

  6. Add the pasta sauce and red pepper flakes to the slow cooker. Stir.

  7. Cover the slow cooker and plug it in. Turn the setting to low and cook for 3 to 4 hours.

  8. When the fondue is ready, cut the mozzarella cheese and bread into 1-inch cubes. Rinse the mushrooms under cold running water and pat dry with a paper towel. Arrange bread, cheese and mushrooms on the serving plate or in the basket.

  9. When the fondue is finished cooking, use a ladle to fill the serving bowl. If your slow cooker has a removable crock, you can serve the fondue in that.

  10. Provide each guest with a small plate, a dipping fork, and a table fork. Take turns dipping the bread, cheese and mushrooms into the sauce. Do NOT put the dipping forks into your mouth! The forks will be hot. Use the table forks to remove food from the dipping forks and to transfer the food to your plate or mouth.

  11. Enjoy and share with your family and friends!

Did You Know: French food was fashionable in the 1970s, and many Americans became fond of fondue. Fondue pots were popular wedding gifts so couples often hosted fondue parties. Friends got together to cook meat and vegetables in hot oil, dip bread in gooey cheese sauce, and enjoy fruit and cake covered in rich melted chocolate.
