Melody’s Record Charm

Thank you for joining us for our program today. We are so happy that you are here!

For today’s program, we will be making a Record Charm, a craft inspired by American Girl character, Melody. Today’s craft can be found online at As The Bunny Hops. The following directions make one record charm.

Materials

  • Black clay (air dry or back clay)

  • Any color of clay (air dry or back clay)

  • Small cookie cutter

  • Craft stick

  • Jewelry bail

  • Adhesive or glue

  • Chain or string

Directions

  1. Start by kneading your clay in your hands until it’s soft and easy to work with.

  2. Roll out your black clay and cut the record shapes using a small cookie cutter.

  3. Cut out the center where your record label will be. We have found it easier to marry the clay label with the record if we made the clay label slightly thicker than the clay record.

  4. Place the clay label in the center of your clay record and gently smooth things together. You can use your fingers or something flat like a craft stick to smooth things out. Use light pressure to avoid warping the shape.

  5. Finish by adding a small hole in the center of your record. If you used oven bake clay, bake it according to package directions. For air dry clay, place it in a cool dry place until it’s set.

  6. Once your clay is dry, it’s time to make it a charm! Glue a jewelry bail to the back of the charm. Use a strong adhesive with a parent or adults help.

  7. Slip the record charm on a chain or string and it’s ready to wear. Don’t forget to make one for Melody to wear, too!
